The Pits The piece consists of several objects containing photos, mirrors and various layers of earth from a pit that I have dug in the garden bed. The differing layers create varying colour hues in the work. The experience of the objects change between being seen as inverted pits and as tree logs. A photo displaying the reflection of a tree in a water puddle covers the upper side of the pit. The photo is transparent and there is a mirror at the bottom of the piece. The back of the photo is covered in a reflecting film, which in turn makes the mirror create an optical illusion of infinity. As you watch the image from the side, the reflection of the tree becomes visible. As you stand right above the object, you can see straight inside of it through a number of reflections where the mirror image of yourself is visible far beneath the floor.
