Instead of a stone in your shoe

Instead of a stone in your shoe

If you have had a small stone in your shoe sometime, you know the pain. Although it is small, the feeling of the stone is big. It can be really annoying and hurt. When I was a kid, I heard a story about a big and dangerous lion. The lion had run a splinter into its foot and was completely paralysed and could not do anything because of the irritation caused by the stick. He was too big to get the stick out. But a small and inconspicuous animal came to his rescue and pulled it out. The lion and the small animal became best friends. I thought that instead of a stone one could have a friend in one’s shoe. A small friend whom you could always feel and be in direct contact with. Someone who was not hard, but soft, and who moulded after the foot. I have made such friends, carved in soft soap and placed close to here. Now the little friends just wait for you to pass by. And end up in your shoe instead of a stone.
I wrote this text directly onto the window with a marker pen. I carved hundreds of millimetre-sized friends in soap and placed them in and around the gallery.
